1. THE PREAMBLE
The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting economic recession have negatively
affected many people’s mental health and created new barriers for people already
suffering from mental illness and substance use disorders.
The pandemic brought about excessive fear of contracting the virus and
uncertainty of the future, loss of lives, unemployment, lack of physical contact
with other family members, friends and colleagues leading to people isolating
themselves, the unfamiliar reality of working from home and children
homeschooling. So many aspects changed that increased stress levels on
majority of people all over the world. This placed people at a higher risk of falling
mentally ill.
Given the difficult times we are now living in due to the pandemic, the paper
seeks to analyze and provide recommendation on the need for employers to
promote the mental well-being of their employees.
This paper analyzes the risk factors, key areas associated with mental ill health
in the workplace, need for employers to promote their employees mental health,
how employers can promote the mental well-being of their employees, provisions
of the mental health amendment bill and demystifies the myths.
This paper concludes by giving recommendations.
